Living Spaces page 2-----------------------------------------
The verandah is a peaceful part of the house with its ornamental but also functional
living space. But the main idea is to blend the house into the yard and the yard
and its surroundings into the house.
The walk ways around the yard are crushed gravel and have been under laid with plastic
to stop the development of weeds. Though many perennials have been put into the yard
the plan is to add more permanent plants to reduce upkeep.
The picture above gives us a view of the conversation nook place beside the lattice
corner windbreak which will in time get a simple shade overhang. This seating area
is beside the pond and fountain.
The bold boulder seen here is one of many interesting rocks which are as much a part
of the yard as the plants and shrubs. The pattern in this one is exceptional as it
so sharply contrasts with the limestone in the fountain.
the picture above gives you a low view through some of the plants but the reason
for the picture was the bumble bee helping himself to the rose blossom.
The owners refer to this as their angel tree with these tine little angels fixed
into the juniper. This yard is designed for daylight and night enjoyment and these
angels glow in the dark. Other parts of the yard have lighting that permit its use
at all hours.
Below just outside the back door and its porch is the herb garden.
This noble hobby horse was created from very old building materials that were part
of a house that the owners renovated on Vancouver island. Besides the aged wood the
real saddle makes this a special piece and under the protection of the verandah roof
can be set out for both decoration and the needs of a horse less miniature cowboy
or girl just as the ragged Ann doll is ready and waiting for a short visitor.
Notice how the building materials and colours have a certain harmony that gives everything
both a rustic look but also that charm of natural materials and authenticity.
