Adult Book Study

In the New Year we will study three books:

Thursday, January 22, 2015 we will meet and talk about
Slammerkin, by Emma Donaghue.

Thursday, February 26, 2015 we will meet and talk about
A House In The Sky, by Amanda Lindhout.

Thursday, March 26, 2015 we will meet and talk about
burial rites, by Hannah Kent.

All three books have difficult material/content to read, and at the same time they are interesting. They offer us an opportunity to reflect and to talk about gender, justice, history, and opportunity to theologically reflect on the book. I will give you questions to assist on reflection.

Slammerkin is set in England in the 1700s and is the story of Mary Saunders. This story is based on a newspaper article and is historical fiction at its best. The research involved in writing this book is accurate, and infused with themes that still bedevil us today.

A House In The Sky is set in Canada and in various places around the world. Amanda Lindhout is from Alberta, she is the protagonist in this dramatic and redemptive memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the world’s most beautiful and remote places. Also into the most imperilled and perilous countries, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivity. This is an exquisitely written story of courage, resilience, and grace.

Burial Rites is set in Iceland in the 1800s and is historical fiction based very closely to the story of Agnes Magnusdottir. This book explores the dynamics between Agnes, the woman awaiting execution, an insular community’s fears, and the destructive power of those who can entrance others.

Everyone is responsible for obtaining their own books. All three are available at Amazon.
Burial Rites is available at the drug store in Tisdale. Please come having read the book and be prepared to talk about the book. We will meet on the above dates from 7:00 – 9:15 with cookies and tea.
