Trojans tie with Beardy's Blackhawks

FTLComm - Tisdale - Friday, October 8, 2004

The Tisdale "AAA" Trojans took to the ice Thursday night in their fourth game of the regular season and their second home game of the year. So for each of them adjusting to their life in Tisdale and the new season of hockey is difficult enough but to add to that they unsettling loss of their very respected coach seemed to put the damper on their enthusiasm in the first two periods of play as the Beardy's Blackhawks began the third

with a two to nothing lead.

Darrell Mann is one of Saskatchewan's most accomplished coaches having taken the Trojans to a national championship and last year got pretty close to heading to the Air Canada Cup for a second time. So it came as no surprise that on Sunday he accepted the head coach job for the Melfort Mustangs. Randy Kerr will have no problem handling the head coach job it is just that he has a full time responsibility at TMSS. We, like the players will have to be patient until the situation is sorted out but in the mean time the team got their stuff together in the third period and began to play like the kind of trim hard skating team that they are.

With David Ritz in net for this game the Trojans had held the powerful and very aggressive Blackhawks to two goals but in the third period the tables turned and the Trojans slammed in two goals from point shots. The Blackhawk came up with an unusual go ahead goal with three Trojans facing a lone Blackhawk who scored. A few minutes later, another point shot and it was a tied game with about four minutes left in the game.

There was no shortage of fans on hand to enjoy a truly outstanding end to end hockey game as both teams have all the speed that makes Midget hockey the most exciting brand of hockey played.

At the end of the third period everyone wiped their brow and they were at it for five more minutes but neither team could put the puck in the net and when the buzzer sounded it was time to call it a night and each team would go home with tie.

Everyone has the Thanksgiving weekend off and the next game is a road trip for a Saturday and

Sunday go round on October 16 and 17 with Swift Current.

The on Saturday and Sunday, October 23 and 24 they have two home games against the two teams from Notre Dame, Hounds and the Argos.

The Trojans have got their new season off to a
nice start with two wins, one loss and this tie.

Early in the season the lines are still getting used to each other and as a whole the team is still relying heavily upon individual play rather than what we all have become so used to from the Trojans and that is clever well coordinated teamwork. But after all it is only the fourth game in the season and with the individual skill levels available on this year's team the fans can

look forward some outstanding hockey this season.

Take a look at the
Trojan web site and look over the roster. You can see that the team has only a small number of players from last year's provincial championship team and is relying on them to bring the players into a team. Team Captain Matt Hill is truly a fireball both on the ice and as a team leader. It is easy to see the rest of the time following his lead and showing the same kind of "go-for-it" attitude that is the hallmark of Hill's play.

I was very impressed with the play of the defense during the last period as they are a set of players with a clearly offense mind set as they kept Beardy's bottled up in their own end much of the time.
