The Trojans spent Christmas Day on the road as they travelled to the 2004-2005 Mac's Tournament in Calgary. The tournament was won by the Saskatoon Contacts but as part of the tournament there was an all star game in which three Trojans were chosen to play and the coach for the all star team was our own Randy Kerr. There was a good sized crowd on hand for the game last night in the RECPlex as the Yorkton Harvest were on the ice and challenging the Trojans for fifth spot in the league. The Yorkton Harvest are typical of Yorkton teams in the past which means they have a roster of big players. The first period was fairly even with the Trojans out shooting the Harvest thirteen to eight but with less than three minutes left in the period Dion Campbell made it a one nothing hockey game for Yorkton. The second period was a Yorkton show as they got the period going with a goal less than three minutes in then thirty seconds later made it a three nothing hockey game. There were only two penalties in the first period one for each team and in the second the Trojans took three penalties and Yorkton only two but one of the Trojan penalties was a checking from behind that put Daniel Hope out of the game. The third period has been the time for the Trojans to go all out this season and the game last night was no exception as Yorkton had little chance to even touch the puck getting only two shots on net. But the push at the end was just not enough. Brett Leffler flipped one up over the Yorkton's goalie's right shoulder with only a minute and half left in the game and seconds later in almost and identical play saw the puck land on top of the net. Though it is always nice to see the home team win it is also a kick to see good hockey and the Thursday night game had lots of excitement. With about eight minutes left in the game Trojan captain Matt Hill got a nice clean break-away and was heading for the goal with Harvest defenseman Myles Masse decided the only way to stop him was to grab Hill around the neck. It was a spectacular penalty but the ref did not reward this viewer with a penalty shot, but maybe next time. The Harvest collected only a total of four penalties in the third period and the Trojans two but even with the goal empty the Trojans could only manage one goal and with less than half a minute on the clock Michael Orosz shot in the final goal for Yorkton from in front of his own net. Defenseman Drew Meunch was named the Trojan player of the game. Tomorrow night it will be time to settle the score as the Trojans are in Yorkton at 7:00. The real test comes next Tuesday night when the league leading Saskatoon Contacts come to town. The Contacts have a good record this year but if the Trojans get it together they are more than capable of winning a home game against Saskatoon but let's hope they don't leave it to the last period to turn on all the jets. Next weekend the Trojans are in Wilcox and will not be on home ice again until Tuesday January 25 when we will see the Prince Albert Mintos. |
