Beardy's Blackhawks defeated by Trojans 5 to 1

FTLComm - Tisdale - Friday, December 3, 2004

When the game ended Thursday night the Tisdale Trojans were once again in second place in their league as they had been edged down to third position the night before by Notre Dame Hounds. Like the league leader, the Saskatoon Contacts, the Trojans have lost only two games this season but have three ties to the Contact's two, so its a tight race at the top of the
league standings.

Robbie Beaudry (22) one of the few veterans on this year's team, played his first game of the season after a broken leg this fall and was able to score his first goal this year. Drew Muench (2) is off with a broken arm, Kyle Garagan (7) with his fourth concussion and Cory Buffin (25) is expected to return to the lineup this weekend after having suffered a separated shoulder.

With these injuries the Trojan coaching staff has been scrambling to put good players on the ice and for the second time this season the head coach has been suspended for tampering. In October Coach Mann was slapped with an indefinite suspension for tampering and just this week coach Kerr was handed a ten game suspension for the same offense

Preston Shupe was on the ice again for this game as he has been filling in for injured players as was Michael McBain last night.

A minute and a half into the first period Tommy Brown got the puck to Todd Panchyson who put it in the net and the period ended two nothing after Robbie Beaudry got his goal. Brenden Turner, on a pass from Cam Oliphant made it three nothing two minutes into the second period and the Blackhawks got their only goal of the game at the fourteen minute mark when Zach Sim scored to end the period three to one.

Tisdale's success this year has been coming from several factors but one important element has been the even play of each line. Matt Hill, the team captain, leads a dangerous crew on the first line and their energy carries right on with each line change. It was at six minutes in the third period that Hill had charged into the Blackhawk zone and got the puck to Lance Redden patiently waiting at the edge of the face of circle right in front of this photographer who watched, instead of photographed, goal number four for the Trojans. The Beardy's goal tender did not have a chance on that one and played an outstanding game but was beaten by overwhelming combination team plays on each goal.

Beardy's Blackhawks are a fine bunch of players, obviously they selected big guys for their roster this year but the team is a little short on discipline and though they can skate with the Trojans they rely to heavily on a few players.

The fifth goal of the game for the Trojans was spectacular as Brenden Turner got the puck to Cam Oliphant who it seemed hit both the upper cross bar and a post as the puck jumped back from his shot but Carson Schell was there to collect the goal as the game ended five to one for the Trojans.

Todd Panchyson, (9) who got the game's first goal, was named player of the game and needs to be recognises as he has scored only three goals this season, but is fourth in the points total for the team, as he has been in there for fourteen assists.

Matt Hill (10) is the team's top scorer as he seems to have some form of nuclear energy at the start of every shift. If I were coaching against him I would put my best skater on him and play him man to man because he is the spark plug of the team. The big and powerful Brett Leffler (19) is the team's second leading scorer who has not only put the puck in the net personally, thirteen times, but has been the guy with the assist, another eighteen times. Daniel Hope (17) is third in scoring with nine goals and eight assists. Not surprising these three make up the first line most of the time and with the solid support that they get from their defense, it is no wonder the Trojans are nearing the top of the league.

Thursday night's game saw Ryan Holfeld in net. Ryan is still the number one goalie in the league with ten wins, one loss and a tie to his credit.

The Trojans play in Moose Jaw Saturday afternoon, Sunday at Wilcox against the Hounds and next Tuesday against the league leading Contacts. Next Saturday night they will be at home again, this time playing the Pat Canadians.
