Motorised sliding |

The snow mobile or snow machine is a very versatile vehicle and though we often see them hustling off across the countryside or on trails they can be a lot of fun without getting very far away. It was just before supper last Wednesday when I spotted this trio of children with a tiny motor toboggan, a Polaris, as they road around the former school yard on a long rope behind on a plastic slider. The driver was a careful easy going fellow who took his passengers up and over mounds of piled |

snow in a steady circuit. For such a small person and such a small machine I was surprised at his skill and even more impressed with the driver's sense of safety. From these pictures you can see that all three are wearing helmets. Their home is just across the street from this old playground and after a large number of trips around he slipped across the empty street and parked in front of their house. Only two blocks away I spotted the pair below. In this case the rider is on the back of a freight sled behind a full size snow machine. This kind of equipment can really get up a lot of speed and the sled has a solid hitch to the toboggan |

They made their way across on open field then came to a stop to make sure that there was no traffic on highway #35 then scooted across into the fields beyond. The weather then and now is perfect for this kind of outdoor excursion and with the fields completely surrounding the community snow mobilers just slip down an alley cross a street or two and they are out in the wide open prairie. In these pictures you can see that even though we have plenty of snow the stubble still sticks up out of the snow. Farmers deliberately leave their stubble as long as possible just so it will catch as much winter moisture as possible. |
