Impressive, absolutely, as I was driving by this house I was amazed at this stunning flowering vine and had to get a picture and get up close for a look at the blooms. Pauline Lindenbach recognised the vine immediately and gave us the name and I am pleased to be able to show it to you. Gardening and flowers are pretty foreign to me but I truly love the beauty and interactivity of plants that lend so much to their environment. So here is what we found out about this fabulous plant. Clematis is a perennial vine that can flower spring, summer and fall, it is easy to care for, disease resistant and a good climber. It can handle a wide range of climates and will thrive in full sun or light shade and seems to like moist well drained soil. There are over three hundre varieties with flowers ranging from pure white one inch blooms (called Autumn Clematis) to the "Dr. Ruppel" which has eight inche burgundy flowers. The variety in these pictures is the velety purple 'Clematis jackmanii' which flowers in mid-summer. Most people will plant this perennial as shown here with a climbing trellis but it works on a fence and can even use other trees to climb upon.
