Bjorkdale farmers claim that they are fighting onward to preserve the rail line but
blame the politics of the situation which looks quite hopeless. There is a widespread
belief among Saskatchewan farmers, not just those at Bjorkdale, but throughout the
prairies, that there is a conspiracy between the grain companies and the ever groveling
railways, to pinch off the rural grain handling system, forcing the tax payer to
pay for the upkeep of the roads, while the railroads can concentrate on more profitable
long haul uni-train traffic. The grain companies have demonstrated their desire
to concentrate their operations as the Wheat Pool went public to provide itself with
the capital needed to become a larger player with larger more costly facilities.
