New Movies this long weekend |

The long weekend in May is a long weekend in Canada and United States and the ideal time for movie makers to introduce their summer season masterpieces. Dan Brown's novel, keep that in mind it is a novel, a story not a theological thesis, the Da Vinci Code has been an amazing best seller and on Friday it makes its debut as a motion picture starring Tom Hanks and directed by academy award winner Ron Howard.  You will notice that this movie has no review on the front page of Ensign and that is because it is not released until Friday. This is a big deal having a major movie released right, just as it is in all the major cities across the continent. The movie is very controversial with protests and boycotts all over the globe so this weekend it opens at the Dynasty Theatre in Melfort.

 Most movies open in the major centres then in the smaller communities across the country. Mission Impossible III starring Tom Cruise, Keri Russell and Philip Seymour Hoffman opened last Friday and lead box office sales. Roger Ebert gives it three stars out of five for its amazing action and Andrew said it is well worth the price of admission.

 in Melfort last weekend as it was an action suspense thriller without all the explosions and insane helicopter antics in Mission Impossible.
One of the problems we have with movies is that good movies should and do entertain, that's what they are for and that's why we go to them so for many just sit back and let them do their job.

 Here in Tisdale this weekend we have a movie coming to town that is just like the Da Vinci Code, it has not yet been released and the folks who go to Over the Hedge here in Tisdale will see it at the same time as all the folks in the major cities. Over the Hedge is made by Dreamworks and is one of the new genre of animated movies where the characters are animals and they interact with animated humans.

The development of computer assisted animation is taking the art form way beyond anything we had initially expected from animated movies but as with so many things there have been some unexpected outcomes. One of the main elements of every movie of all time has been the sound, the voices, the sound affects and the music. What we have discovered with the more complex and superior versions of modern animation is that the voices that are given to the characters in the animation often take on the persona of the actor doing the voice. Instead of becoming more computerised modern animations movies are becoming more and more human.
In Over the Hedge it is the voices of Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Wanda Sykes, Steve Carrell, William Shatner and Canadian pop singer Avril Levigne who make the soundtrack on which the animation is created. |
