LaRonge winter festival |

We walked over to the lake shore late Sunday afternoon as the weekend activities were wrapping up and we saw log sawing, wood carrying, a great snowshoe race, log chopping and nail pounding all within about twenty minutes. There was good spirits and mud. |

On the right is a video of the things we saw including the remarkable snowshoe race win by grade nine Churchill Community School teacher Christine Ravenis. As we came back from the festival we encountered (above) the Battleford Stars who had just arrived for the second game in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's semi-finals with the LaRonge Ice Wolves. Tonight the Stars lead the best of seven series three games to nothing as they are cleaning up on the |

LaRonge has just had a difficult week with the owner of a motel being held up and robbed, then tied up and left in a closet, then on Friday morning there was a hold up at the Credit Union. The community has a very large population and a level of unemployment that is positively staggering. |

The tradition of an end of winter rendezvous lives on in many Northern communities and though they have been modernised many of the traditions of the trapper days survive. Most of all it is time to get together, enjoy each other's company and have a little fun.
Ice Wolves. But no one is complaining as the team has had absolutely amazing season knocking off the Nipawin Hawks and the Melfort Mustangs to get to the semi-finals.
