Yarra and the owner of Canada Steamship Lines

Back into the tar pit

It takes only a Federal budget to once again bury the Canada Steamship Lines story. Like some foul smelling gas released from a tar pit, we collectively shy away from the unsavoury revelations, and then the entire affair sinks quietly back into the ooze.

Consider the sad case of the Canada Steamship Lines vessel Yarra. Crewing and trading rules between Australian ports were recently relaxed by that country's federal (Commonwealth) government, and so Canada Steamship Lines fired the Australian crew of the ship and brought in a low cost Ukrainian crew to replace them. The sad affair has been covered at various Australian websites, including:

An ethical flag of convenience shipping line, indeed.
