Computer Advances In Education :
Another Internet Revolution

training courses...were taking place in a computer lab

In the Fall of 1997 I had a brief experience in providing software training courses sponsored by Gronnerud & Associates Ltd(1). of Regina. The training courses were provided to provincial
.
and federal employees and were taking place in a computer lab at the premises of Gronnerud &
.
Associates Ltd. One can understand the cost of these training courses by referring to the use of
.
the physical and computer facilities, paper manuals, instructional services, and the fact that
.
students would be away from their routine governmental work.

text based... maintained mostly by e-mail

In early 1998 I moved to Nipawin, a town in North East Saskatchewan. By this time I became
.
aware of the opportunity to deliver software training courses through the Internet and I approached
.
Cumberland Regional College for exploring a business partnership in this educational area.
.
The population served by the college is geographically sparse, and I felt that the Internet would
.
have provided an innovative and inexpensive way to deliver such courses. Students wouldn't need
.
to drive in the cold weather, there wouldn't be any paper manual, and they could study in the
.
comfort of their home. The college was not prepared to take this educational direction and I felt
.
somewhat perplexed to their resistance to changes. The Internet courses I was prepared to deliver
.
were text based and the communication with the students would have been maintained mostly by
.
e-mail.

CyberTech...150
.courses at a cost never heard before, $19.95 per training module

We know that the Internet is revolutionising the way we do business and live, but until two weeks
.
ago I was not aware of the rapid changes occurring in On-line learning. I realised of such changes
.
when one morning I was watching CNN and I came across an advertisement mentioning the web site of an On-line learning school: CyberTech Training Institute(2). I love to keep abreast of
.
technological changes, therefore I wrote down the web site, I logged on the Internet and visited
.
CyberTech's site. It was another discovery and I immediately shared it with Timothy Shire,
.
Publisher of North Central Internet News-Ensign. CyberTech has partnered with most
.
prominent information technology and courseware publishers and is providing now over 150
.
courses at a cost never heard before, $19.95 per training module. We can now take training
.
courses through the Internet, and have access to free of charge best courseware and textbooks at
.
any time and anywhere in the world. Exercises are down-loadable and on-line instructional guides
.
can even be read aloud to you. It is another business and educational revolution effecting
.
governments, schools, corporate businesses and consumers at large. The economical implications
.
of On-line learning are enormous and mind boggling, let us hope that our leaders shake up the
.
chains of their obsolete and traditional mind set and look forward to the new challenges of creating
.
new wealth in the virtual and Knowledge driven world of the Internet.
