In the three prairie provinces of Canada and across the US central plains Co-op stores
are to found in most villages. Locally owned, controlled and directed by the democratic
management of a local board, these stores are a shining example of people providing
for themselves excellent retail outlets. The profits from the operation are returned
to the membership in the form of modest dividends based on the amount spent in the
association's store but the over all Federated Co-op Ltd. is able to develop
house brand products and compete effectively with Safeway and the WestFair
food store chain which goes by various names including SuperStore and Extra
Foods. Besides the big stores in Tisdale, Melfort and Nipawin all surrounding towns have their own outlets which in some cases are associated with the bigger stores while some are separate associations. |
