Breaking ground for new 18 unit condo

FTLComm - Tisdale - Tuesday, May 4, 2004

This morning two fellows with blue prints were out strolling around the site of the old TUCs school they were soon joined by others, then a couple of surveyors arrived and sticks were driven into the ground to mark the steel rods they were planting.

On Sunday this trailer load of form material was unloaded on the site so this morning's walkabout was no surprise.

This heralds the beginning of a very big project. The new building that will be constructed on this site is an eighteen unit condominium. Century 21 has been selling these units for some time and no construction could begin until a critical number were sold.

The strategic location of this building is interesting as it will sit right beside the almost continuously busy, Golden Age Centre. It is interesting to note that today marks the third anniversary of the
sod turning ceremony that began construction of the Centre in 2001. This neighbourhood is a single family dwelling area with the school and its playground as the only nonresidential thing in sight, but the area has been re-zoned for this large multi-dwelling structure more than a block from the Madisson and Cedar Villa buildings. It is like putting a whole block of houses in a single building.

The new building will have next door access to the Centre and a short block from the Beeland Co-op shopping centre.

The afternoon brought Mr. Chupa to the scene as he began peeling off the top soil from the area which will become a building. His job is to take the surface down fourteen inches so that on Monday drilling in the piles will begin.

The new structure will have its garage on the main floor with all of the units on the subsequent floors above.

In the past few years it seems Chupa Excavation has moved this dirt around quite a bit as they
finished up the site after the demolition of TUCs. Once the rubble was removed and the foundation cleared they smoothed out the land. Then in 2001 they prepared the site for the new Golden Age Centre. Once the building was put up Chupas sorted out the area so that it could be seeded to grass. One of the oddities to this process was that the topsoil they had piled up for landscaping was carried away in error. But now, once again its time to prepare the same piece of land for another project.

Besides the construction of the new building the Golden Age Centre is going to pave the area on the west side of the Centre to increase their parking area.

The new residents of this condo will have a nice view of the sky and of Tisdale from their windows as there are only two blocks of town west of this site.
