FTLComm - Tisdale - April 8, 2000 |
The continuous discussions about global warming are a bit on the tedious side because for most scientist there is only evidence of what has happened not what is, to be considered. Global warming has happened and in the early 80s while we were living in the Yukon climatologists working for the federal government were discussing the way climate of the Yukon would be changing in the decades to come. Welcome to North Dakota. What has happened is that the world's climates have migrated toward each of the poles about two degrees latitude. Here in Tisdale we are now discovering that our "normal" weather is what forty years ago would have been "normal" for the farming communities just North of Minot. Fall last for what seems forever, winter is less severe and spring drags on and on and on. The crops are planted earlier and precipitation patterns are significantly altered so that we are receiving slightly less over all moisture each year but it is more moderated as to when we receive it. This morning's little snow fall is a typical early spring thing, the temperature was just below freezing so we got snow instead of a light rain and the difference was only two degrees. Though soil conditions are fairly dry they were also like this last spring and there was lots of summer growing rain to sustain a crop, there is no reason not to expect this to occur again this year. Certainly we can expect severe weather at times as we are now living two degrees further South then we used to so summer storms will have more energy. Odd is the nature of weather, La Ronge had lightening and hail on Monday night of this week. |
